CFD support for the TU Delft Hydro Motion Team
The TU Delft Hydro Motion Team develops an innovative hydrogen-powered foiling boat to compete at the forefront of sustainable maritime technology. Designing and building a high-performance vessel within a single academic year requires rapid design iterations, where every change to the hull, foils or propulsion system influences the boat's overall performance. Making the right engineering decisions early in the design process is therefore essential.
DEKC supports the team with advanced Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations throughout the development process. By analyzing the complex flow around the hull, foils and propulsion system, we help evaluate design concepts long before physical testing begins. The simulations provide detailed insight into hydrodynamic behavior and the forces acting on the vessel, enabling the team to optimize the performance of its new Pi foil system. The results also support key engineering decisions, including the sizing of the powertrain, the evaluation of propulsion concepts, the refinement of the propeller design and the determination of structural loads for the engineering of the foils and struts.
The collaboration combines the ambition and creativity of the student team with DEKC’s expertise in hydrodynamics, simulation and vessel design. By translating complex CFD analyses into practical engineering insights, we help the team accelerate development, optimize performance and make well-founded design decisions throughout the project. The result is a partnership in which advanced simulation supports innovation and contributes to the next generation of sustainable maritime technology.
