Commercial seagoing vessels have to comply with multiple types of rules. These rules are very influential to the design, subdivision and capacities of the vessel. Finding possibilities to lessen the effects of the rule requirements will result in a vessel with increased commercial possibilities. One of the most influential rule types on subdivision and capacities of the design are the damage stability requirements.

“Can the application of a filler material lead to a more economical viable ship design?” This question is the starting point of the investigation. To find the answer to this question the historical applications and researches have been studied. The possibilities and limitations of the various rules haven been studied to determine if the filler application is allowed. Various ship types and damage stability rules have been studied to determine the ship types with the biggest potential improvement and to find the best method of presenting the improvements.
